Rittenhouse Square Flower Market
The Rittenhouse Square Flower Market is an event that is held annually in early May. This festival originated as a charity event for children-focused nonprofits throughout the Philadelphia area. Since its first festival in 1914, this street market has raised more than $1.6 million for its various causes. It’s well-known as the oldest continuously-held event in the Rittenhouse Square area. If you can’t make it out for the first day of the event, there’s no need to worry. The flower market runs on two consecutive days. And whatever you’re looking for, this market is guaranteed to have it. There are beautiful and bright flowering plants, standing and hanging plants, and all sorts of savory herbs. Once you’re done shopping, stay for one of the musical performances, including local bands and even a jazz quartet.
Love Your Park Week
Love Your Park Week consists of eight full days of events, festivities, and workshops that are located all over the city of Philadelphia. This enormous festival began when the Fairmount Park Conservancy and the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Branch came together to form a collaborative partnership. They decided that they wanted to celebrate the city’s public green spaces, and Love Your Park Week was the result. The event is their way of bringing together thousands of volunteers and neighbors to clean, green, and celebrate Philadelphia’s beautiful public parks. Some things that volunteers can help out with are service projects, educational programs, activities for families and friends, and tours. You can participate in any of the city’s 100-plus parks.
Rittenhouse Square Fine Craft Fair
The Rittenhouse Square Fine Craft Fair is a bi-annual fair that happens in May and again in October. It was held first in 2012 when the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Fair became too large, so its organizers had to separate the crafts from the traditional art. With so much amazing talent in Philadelphia, this expansion was definitely necessary—more than 120 artists participate each year. There are also many emerging artists who get their own section. You can find many different pieces, including furniture, pottery, glass, photography, and woodwork. There are also wearables, such as jewelry, clothing, accessories, and leather and fiber handbags. Rittenhouse Square even closes down the street so that the local restaurants can expand their outdoor seating areas, so make sure to stop by for a bite.
There’s nothing better than getting outside on a beautiful day and participating in your community. Visit all of these festivals for a great time.
